Ok, guys, help me out here. I've been trying to understand some of the transaction lingo used when guys are traded, dumped, moved, etc. Can someone tell me what it means when a guys is optioned versus outrighted to the minors? What does designated for assignment mean? As in, Borowski was designated for assignment awhile ago, but I haven't seen anything else on him, whereas Remlinger was designated and since traded. Does that mean Borowski is hovering in baseball purgatory or something? Are the Cubs still paying him?

Please help me out. I've posted this question before on other blogs, but haven't gotten an answer.

I'm not sure if this answers all of your questions, but it's a good resource.

My favorite part of that article is the following:

In recent years, the Minnesota Twins lost Enrique Wilson this way. When it came time for Cleveland to make their choice, the Twins did what they could to "hide" Wilson, but the Indians found him anyway.

It just cracks me up that at one time Enrique Wilson (who hit .136 for the Cubs this year) was someone that the Twins would want to hide.

Carrie Muskat ripped that off in her latest mailbag. She just changed a few words around. :|

Borowski is pitching for the D-Rays so yes, he is in baseball purgatory in that sense.
