CUBS CLOBBERED BY CARDS IN 11-2 OPENER

Palm Beach Posted A Seven-Run Third Inning To Run Away With Game 1

By Bo Fulginiti

JUPITER, Fla—Following the magical six-game home stand at Jackie Robinson Ballpark that ended on Sunday, it didn’t take long for the Daytona Cubs to come back down from cloud nine.

Making a final run for a 2005 playoff birth, the Cubs headed south on I-95 to embark on a six-game road trip with their first stop at Roger Dean Stadium on Monday and the Palm Beach Cardinals didn’t exactly welcome Daytona with open arms.

The Cardinals roughed up Cubs starter J.R. Mathes (9-8) with a seven-run third inning and Daytona never recovered, as Palm Beach cruised to the series opening victory by a final of 11-2.

Mathes was charged with eight earned runs on 10 hits surrendered as he took his eighth loss of the season.

Palm Beach outfielder Ty Parker led the charge for the “Redbirds” as he recorded a 3-for-5 evening with a solo homerun and two runs scored.

Daytona tried to stage a rally in the sixth when they scored three runs including a two-RBI double from infielder Issmael Salas, but two of those runs were later called back when Cardinals manager Pop Warner pointed out a discrepancy in the lineup card that showed the Cubs were batting out of order.

Cubs left fielder Jeff Culpepper provided the only bright spot at the plate for Daytona as he stroked his first homerun of the season with a solo blast down the right field line in the seventh frame.

With the loss the Cubs dropped to 27-29 as the Cardinals improve to 35-23 and have now taken a 1.5 game lead over the Dodgers in the Eastern Division.

The Cubs will try to bounce back in Game 2 on Tuesday as they send All-Star righty Randy Wells (8-2, 3.15 ERA) to the bump to match up against Cardinals right-hander Dennis Dove (2-3, 3.43 ERA).

First pitch is a special scheduled time of 6:35 p.m. EST.
