I was just looking at the Cubs 40 man roster............some are alittle puzzling to me. Who's Geovany Soto? His numbers don't look great.

Richard Lewis

Mike Fontenot

2 minor league 2B both on the 40 man............is that normal? Just seemed odd to me.

he's our top catcher prospect. I can see a Lewis/Fontenot platoon if they decide to go cheap at 2B next year.

Soto is the AAA catcher. He's quite young(22) and has a great walk rate at Iowa. His power has been nonexistent to this point however. Another year in AAA, and I'd like to see him replace Blanco as the backup C.

Fontenot is not strictly a 2B. He's logged a bit of time at 3B, and I even saw him at SS in the Iowa box score recently.

Huh? I went to alot of ICub games last year when Dubois was there, but I didn't recognize those guys. I realize they may not have been there.

I didn't realize how much I enjoyed and was spoiled by the ICubs until I left Iowa. It was kind of nice to drive down from Ames on a regular basis and catch a game for less then $10.

Although, I can go check out the Springfield Cardinals anytime now! LOL!

Soto and Lewis were in AA last season, and Fontenot was in the Orioles organization. That's why you didn't see them at Iowa last year.

Fontenot came over in the Sosa deal. He's had a very good year in Triple A, and even looked good in a few at bats in the majors this year. Expect him to be called up in Sept, and then expect him to make the Cubs out of Spring Training next year.

Lewis came over from Atlanta in the Juan Cruz trade. Lewis had a terrific year at W. Tenn last year (his first good year), but has really struggled this year. He has excellent defense. He also has excellent tools. It's too bad that he regressed. He could have been the Cubs starting second baseman next year had he done what he did in Double A.

Tacking on to what some people have said...

Last season, Richard Lewis was called up to AAA towards the end of the season. After some struggles, he ended up breaking his leg and sat out the rest of the season. Lewis had an abnormally high BABIP in AA, which was at the heart of a lot of his success in the Southern League (I believe he even won the MVP). With the expected numbers regression and his injury, Lewis has fallen mightily this season. He is still a quality defensive 2B, but whether or not he'll ever get back to form is anyone's guess.

As for Fontenot, he's played all around the diamond this season; mostly at 2B and some at 3B. He showcases above average speed and a decent enough eye at the plate to draw his share of walks. However, he's not much of a power thread. In all likelihood, he will be a utility man in his major league career.

Soto is an interesting case. He probably is the most patient hitter in the Cubs' system...but that's pretty much the extent of it. He's a good defensive catcher and is young for the PCL, which means he should see a nice major league career. However, overall, he'll likely be a backup catcher for a large portion of that career.
