Not at my own computer so I dont have access to the bookmarked contracts site but I'm pretty sure Wood's 2007 option automatically vests if he reaches a certain number of innings in 2005 and 2006. I think 300. IIRC, then that means that Kerry would not only have to stay completely healthy, but also pitch extremely well in order to reach that mark. Which if he did, Im sure the cubs would have no problem bringing him back. However, if he doesn't we may be able to get out of the contract a year early. Can anyone validate this?

Same as Maddux, the option vests with 400 IP in '05-'06. I'd say it's really unlikely that he automatically vests.

maddux's vesting option is pretty devastating towards us. if he was the same old maddux it wouldnt be, but when your throwing 62 mph fastballs and your ERA is 4.50 or whatever it is you know he's not the same pitcher. hip-hip hooray for $10M to both maddux and woody....now that is some good value right there.

Thanks...so the option doesnt automatically vest. Does it then become a team option? If so, for how much and what is the buy out? And yes, unless wood pitches 320 innings or so next year, Id say its highly unlikely to auto vest.

It's a mutual option, 13.5 million with a 3 million buyout.
