I'm not saying that Grieve is the answer to any extent, but, living up here in Wisconsin for about 10 years, I remember all of the hype of the potential that Grieve had with Milwaukee, they talked about him being a great OBP player. And don't quote me on this, but he possibly may have won ROY with Tampa...he rots on the bench when he's up with the Cubs...and we seem to be able to option him constantly with no problem...is Grieve just a fill-in for the rest of his career?

They could send down Mitre and bring up another bat but the only position players on the 40-man are Soto, Fontenot, Lewis, CP and Grieve.

Fontenot, CP and Lewis need to play at Iowa. Soto's a catcher and Grieve is redundant.

BTW, I didn't realize Greenberg was on the 60-day DL.

I don't like it, Mitre should not be in the pen right now.

I wonder if 1 more trip through the rotation with long outings would be enough to convince people that 7 relievers is a waste. Remlinger has 4 IP in 4 outings in July. About 4 guys have had just 1 inning of work since the break. This is seriously not good for the bullpen.

Yahoo says he's on the 15 day.

Cubs==Terminally Dumb.

Meanwhile, Ben Grieve is a quality PH option on the bench who we jettison, AND we keep Jose Macias as one alternative.

Dumb dumb dumb. Does Grieve have lice or something??

NO, it's called the Baker factor.

Something else to think about with regard to Grieve, Gerut, Hollandsworth...

This team is dangerously close to being too lefthanded.

If the Cubs face a lefty now and Baker starts Murton, the only righties on the bench are Cedeno, Blanco and Macias (switch hitter).

Now if Baker starts Cedeno, Neifi (for Walker) AND Murton, he's left with Blanco and Macias from the right side as pinch hitters.

Hendry needs to jettison Macias like yesterday and find an actual right-handed hitting major league pinch hitter who can play the corners in the infield.

Grieve won his ROY with the Oakland A's.

He probably is a bench hitter for the rest of his career.

This in from Rotoworld:

Cubs optioned outfielder Ben Grieve to Triple-A Iowa.

Grieve had hits in both of his at-bats in his latest stint with the Cubs, but he still goes to make room for Jody Gerut. He belongs on some team's bench. Jul. 19 - 4:17 pm et

Bah, we have Jose Macias and he is INFINITELY more valuable!!!

Any way we can call up another pitcher? I don't think 12 is enough.

The sad thing is that half of them are probably better hitters than Macias too :-P

Surely there is some team who needs a guy off the bench who will claim him...

I'm just shocked he's never landed in the AL where he could DH, wouldn't his high OBP be worth a DH spot to somebody? Helloooo A's, are you listening? lol...

He wasnt DFA'd. He was optioned. Teams do not have the chance to sign him.

Wasn't Grieve at liberty to refuse the assignment?

That seems to be what I gathered from my reading of the CBA.

I just don't get it. Grieve has done a great job every time they have called him up. I didn't understand when they called up the 2 rookies instead of Grieve. Grieve has proven that he is a valuable commodity off the bench and the Cubs treat him like crap. Meanwhile, Mitre is sitting in the bullpen doing nothing.

It makes it very difficult to believe the Cubs when they talk about letting guys earn jobs. There is just no way to deny that their favorites get the benefit of the doubt. The interesting thing to me is that Hendry went after Grieve, and did it again this year, when it doesn't appear some people like him at all. He's done everything they could have asked, so what's the problem?

Macias is the teams' only back-up 3rd baseman. That is why Grieve was sent down.
