Can this team play well enough up until the deadline to prove to you that is worthy of a serious buyers mode? If Dunn isn't dealt but there is that one player that can put them over the top do u go the possible rental mode? Do pay a steep price for guys like Baez, Guardaro, Weathes to help strengthen the pen? Or would u prefer Hendry tried the buyer-seller mode.

I have no interest in a rental regardless of how the team plays before the deadline. If they can acquire an impact long term improvement, they should.

Let's get one thing straight: when it comes right down to it, the only people who care about 1908 are the fans. The press like the 1908 thing, too, but only because it gives them something (however inane) to talk about when the Cubs are playing on a national stage, like ESPN or FOX. That and that asinine called shot story... :roll:

 

Having said that - the job of a good GM, IMO, is to get a team together that will make the postseason, EVERY season. If that means rentals, fine - unless of course you sell yourself out for the next season(s) in the process. The goal is to get the best record in your league - let the postseason take care of itself, because frankly the games played are too small a sample to be representative of how good a team REALLY is, particularly when the outright winner of the entire shebang (AL or NL) still has to play TWO FULL playoff series. It doesn't seem right to me that a 100+ win team in the regular season can, and often does, bow down to a 90-game or less winning WC team in the first round of the playoffs. But that's JMO.

 

I can't remember the year the Phillies had a monster season, but lost the WS. But the beginning of the season after, Steve Stone said that the team who wins the most games in their respective league during the regular season is for all intents and purposes the best team in the majors. That made sense to me.
