July 16, 2005 - PEORIA, IL-The Peoria Chiefs in conjunction with the Chicago Cubs have announced that right-handed reliever Michael Phelps has joined the Chiefs from the Arizona Rookie League team in Mesa. He is expected to arrive in time for Saturday’s 6:30 home game against Cedar Rapids.

The 21-year old right-hander made just one appearance in Mesa going 2/3 of an inning on Thursday striking out both batters he faced. Phelps was drafted by the Cubs in the 11th round in the 2005 draft out of Central Missouri State University. He helped the Mules to a 3rd place finish in the NCAA Division II Championships in Montgomery, Alabama.

Phelps fills out the Chiefs roster at 25 players taking the spot left vacant by Thursday’s promotion of Luis Montanez to AA West Tenn. The Chiefs now have 13 pitchers and 12 position players.
