Here's how I'm rooting. The Nats must collapse, utterly, and then the Braves must romp in that division. Then we are competing with Houston, Miami, Philly and the Mets where a game and a half separates all of us. And the Braves romping ought to help keep those Eastern teams down. We need to beat up on Houston. What'd I miss?

Our basic formula for the playoffs is to stop sucking. I'm not sure we can do that.

Exactly. Step 1 is "win". But I don't know that this team can do that consistently. We've now had 2 streaks this year of 7 losses or more.

Who cares who wins the East? Why can't the Nats get hot, and the Braves collapse? It works just as well, so who cares?

It works just as well, but is much less likely.

The Formula is easy to figure out.

Win, and you increase your chances to be in the playoffs.

Lose, and you increase your chances to be shipped into the minors or given an outright release.

"Even you, Dorn."

"What if we don't finish dead last?"

"She'll replace you with someone else, and send you back to the minors, or give you outrighted release."

"Well, there's one thing left to do then."

"What's that?"

"Win the whole ****ing thing."

I think that is what will happen. I am sure that when we look up in September, Washington will have fallen apart and Atlanta will be in control of the east. Nearly every team in that division is reasonably competitive. I think that gives the Cubs a good shot.

Florida, Atlanta, Washington, New York, and Philadelphia can beat up on each other while the Cubs take care of weaker opponents like Pittsburgh and Cincinnati. If we hold our own against St. Louis, the rest should not be too bad.
