Isn't this what we always see from a Chicago Cubs team?

as in...play extremely well for a while, then choke. Luckily that choke occured in July, rather then the typical august/september allowing us time to start a new run. With a new spark *as said in a previos topic* like a new manager, or even a new big named player, this team is capable of another big run to make the playoffs.

Although many of you are feeling patterson is the worst thing to happen to the cubs since....sosa...i for one feel no one available is any better then corey. Maybe doing something, like letting DLee teach him to hit could help, but trading patterson, will probably hurt the team rather then help. I do agree that a LF is needed, but the possiblities are discussed in the Transaction thread.

All i am saying with this post, is maybe this mid summer slump, will allow the cubs to make a late season push *like last years astros* towards the playoffs

These are the Cubs. They have sucked for quite a while now.

Agreed, is being "negative" actually being a realist?

2003 wasn't too long ago. Right now we're so far from that level of baseball it's truly unbelievable.

Let the record show: it took exactly a season and a half to go from within one game of the World Series to just another bad ballclub.

It's getting harder to remain optimistic. The wild card is still in reach but the division is a longshot even if the Cards go .500 from here on out. In the WC race we are in 5th place and 6 games back. If the bad baseball continues for another 10 days or so we will probably be reduced to longshots even for the WC and Hendry will become a seller at the deadline. It would be really interesting to see how Dusty handles a rebuilding project.

A lot of us are hoping he's part of the dismantling before the rebuilding. As for the division, it's over. I'm not even paying attention to what the Cards are doing. They could call up Memphis - all of it - and still win the division.

Yeah, the division is a done deal for the Cards. My worst fear for the Cubs is that they continue to straggle in the middle of the playoff pack. Of course I want them to win the WC, but if not then I'd rather they lose a ton of games starting now so they can commit to a proper retooling. The worst seasons are the ones where you don't contend and you don't rebuild either. Watching a proper rebuilding could actually be fun, especially with a new manager.
