Peoria Chiefs Press Release[/url]"]PEORIA, IL- The Peoria Chiefs in conjunction with the Chicago Cubs have announced the addition of right-handed pitchers Mike Jones and Drew Dickson. To make room on the roster, right-handed relief pitcher Jon Hunton has been assigned to Boise of the Northwest League and Al Corbeil has been released by the Cubs. In addition, shortstop Joe Simokaitis has been sent to Peoria but has not been activated.

Jones was signed by the Cubs as a non-drafted free agent this June after playing at the University of New Orleans. The 23-year-old right-handed pitcher from McCool, Mississippi was 0-1 this season in one relief appearance for Boise of the Northwest League. At New Orleans in 2005, he was 4-6 with a 5.91 ERA in 91 1/3 innings. In three years for the Privateers, Jones went 10-12 in 190.2 innings with a 5.33 ERA.

Dickson, 21, was signed by the Cubs as a non-drafted free agent out of Bossier Parish Community College in Bossier City, Louisiana. He made 10 relief appearances for the Cavaliers with a 2-1 record and a 3.63 ERA. The right-hander recorded six saves, striking out 20 in 17 1/3 innings. Opposing batters hit just .119 against him. As a hitter, he hit .356 in 23 games with two home runs and 17 RBI.

Simokaitis was taken in the 10th round of the 2005 draft out of the University of Nebraska. The 22-year old shortstop hit .310 in 69 games for the Cornhuskers this season, adding three home runs, 37 RBI, and 18 stolen bases. He was named to the All-Big XII second team in 2005 and was honorable mention in 2003 and 2004. He will join the Chiefs but will not be activated. This spring, he helped the Cornhuskers qualify for the College World Series, hitting .455 over three games in Omaha.

The Peoria Journal Star also indicates that "Before Mallory could celebrate the mammoth homer, the outfielder was released by the Chicago Cugs following the game."

(Mallory hit a mammoth home run earlier during the game, giving him a 7 game hitting string.)

That was a MONSTER shot.

On the pregame show, they said that Jesse Shmidt (sp?) was promoted from Boise to replace Mallory. They also said that there's still one open slot on the 25-man Chiefs roster.

I wonder if Dickson is related to former Cub pitcher Lance Dickson (since they both spell their last names the same, and the usual spelling is Dixon).
