If I were to guess, not based on my preferences, but Jed's, I think this is the most likely scenario.

I actually think Snell is more likely than Fried. Mainly because of the QO.

Certainly out on Teoscar, probably out on Santander. The reason Alonso has some appeal to me is he has that kind of pop where even if Wrigley was super pitcher friendly again, it wouldn't matter for Alonso. The only megabat out there is Soto and I think we all know it's not going to happen, but Alonso as a DH who can fill in at 1B if  Busch struggles or needs a break. If they start going 6 or 7 years at 25 a year, I'm hard out. Even 5/150 makes me pause because I think he's going to age like Adam Dunn, but he's the best of the possible bat for the Cub needs.

Age like Dunn who walks half the time. That's gonna be a lot of fun. This guy is a 120 1B and needs to be treated as such, not given a 5/125 deal. I think it's absolutely crazy.

I am also out on Alonso. Now if he misplays the market and ends up with a Chapman like deal, sure, why not for a year or two. But definitely not 5/$125M.

But then they still don't have money for other players like pitching and catching if they choose to stay under the tax

All of the $ in FA should be spent on pitching IMO. If they really need a LHB for the bench it should be via trade. Get a guy who is ready and projects reasonably well but is blocked and offer a little premium. They did it before. Get a guy who will cost nothing for a few years. If they target a C I don't think they will come with that high of a salary either. Like Langeliers has 1 more pre-arb year and then will cost like, 20M, through his arb years?
