A weekend that started with the Cubs’ destiny in their own hands ended in utter failure. Four straight losses to the Cardinals all-but eliminated the Cubs’ playoffs hopes.

With Wrigley Field emptying and his teammates already headed for the showers, a dejected Nicholas Castellanos took one last long look at Wrigley Field for the season.

“I was just taking it in,” Castellanos said. “It was what could have been my last home game as a Chicago Cub playing at that field. I wanted to remember how I feel at that time, just taking in that moment. I didn’t want to rush away from it. You never want to have that feeling again. I was sitting there, looking out at the field and taking it all in. I know I’m not going to be a Cub forever. So just take it in.”

Castellanos isn’t shutting the door on a possible return to the Cubs. When asked if he would like to return with a new contract, Castellanos responded with a question of his own: “What do you think?”

“I love the fans here,” Castellanos said. “Being able to walk to and from the park. Just seeing how much they genuinely love the Cubs. Winning by 10 or losing by 10, they’re in it, they’re focused and they love their Cubs. It’s awesome. It’s pure. It was a lot of fun to be a part of that.”

It's a real shame he didn't get to experience the postseason with the Cubs. He was one of the best parts of this miserable season and I'm still glad we traded for him (I doubt the prospects we traded away amount to much). I said a few posts ago that Castellanos really desperately wants to come back -- he loves being here in Chicago and being a Cubs player.

I don't think the Cubs are that interested in re-signing him. We need to extend our best players and fix the bullpen. I think I'd rather spend on Rendon or Donaldson (on a short term contract) and just move KB to RF. I do like Castellanos and I don't think the defense is as bad as advertised before we traded for him. I think he can be average in an OF corner and certainly looked more invested and was trying harder with the Cubs.

We'll see what happens, but I could see Castellanos replacing J.D Martinez in Boston if he opts-out or maybe signing with the White Sox. I think the chances of the Cubs re-signing him are like ~10% right now.

Nick seems like a great teammate and a good guy. Super passionate about the game. I wish nothing but the best for him and it really sucks he joined the team during this shitty season.

Move Contreras to 1B, trade Rizzo for baller CF, thank me tomorrow.

I appreciate Sofa's level of fandom where he knows enough about the Cubs to conclude that they all suck, but just assumes there are infinite create a players in the MLB universe of every conceivable skill set ready (and available) to come in and fix all our problems.

Apparently the pipeline of such players heads straight to Milwaukee.

The only way he comes back is if someone wants to overpay for Schwarber to fill another position of need (every day second baseman, shut down reliever, etc). Outside of that, I loved watching Nick, but Kyle hit better than him during the time he wasn’t here, is a better defender, and will cost a fraction of what Nick does.
