it's possible to damage it enough that it requires surgical repair if it's torn and detached enough that it can't heal on its own.

You are a percentage guy. Just know that the chances of tearing an MCL and being out a full year is like almost zero.

 

He will be back in two months if that's what it is.

Knees seem to be 50 50 sprain vs tear. Hope its the sprain. Ive seen bad knee pops come back mcl sprains. Hell there was hope schwarbers knee was just a sprain & its looked like it got ran through over by a semi.

I hate to be this guy, but a sprain is a tear.

It is technically. But in sports descriptions a sprained acl or mcl can be weeks to a couple months.. a torn acl or mcl pushes close to and sometimes more than a year of lost time.
