2.60 ERA , 1.10 WHIP from 2012-14, I assume he was injured all last year. Nice bounce back candidate

I think you mean a...Bos-back* candidate.

I wonder why we picked him up at this stage? Meaning he's in arbitration and coming off an awful season. Supposedly messed with his delivery and didn't find it until very late. At any rate, if we picked him up NOW, I guess he's insurance and we'd offer him arb if we can't get someone else in the mix rather quickly? Seems a bit like Cahill insurance to me. If he wants too much, here's our next version, just on a ML deal off the bat.....

I probably wouldn't read too much into it. They think he's interesting, it costs nothing to snag him and maybe he earns a spot or maybe later on you sneak him through waivers. Nothing lost by having him if there's optimism he can rebound. Last year they did the same thing with Joe Ortiz and he had zero impact on the MLB roster.

Basically playing musical roster spots until 40 man decision time. On the other hand, now that they're ready to spend big money on big players, they're not going to have the extra 3-5 mill laying around to fill holes with lottery tickets like Maholm, Feldman, Baker, Motte, Veres, etc.

It's not even the money as much as the playing time that will be scarce. The tail of the bullpen and the end of the bench are the only places available for that any longer.
