I firmly believe that the front office would be completely content with standing pat, but you also don't want your fans to see you do nothing when in position to make a move.. This happens every year. Fans pay the salaries, if they see the front office sit still, they lose loyalty. No different than Dombrowski saying "we want to show our fans we aren't giving up."

They've never stood pat at the deadline with any of the teams they've run. And making moves only to placate fans when they could pretty easily improve a competitive team seems really pointless and foolish.
