OPPO GRAND SLAM ADDISON RUSSELL

That is second grand slam and 10th HR at TN this season.

He is 2-4 with a 2B, HR and 5 RBI tonight. Batting .303 with a .909 OPS

Castro had a better OPS in Tennessee at the same age

true, but Russell already has more HR in 153 Tennessee AB than Castro did in 1000 MILB ABs

MILB career ISOs:

Russell - .224

Castro - .111

best prospect in baseball.

So basically, whichever Cub prospect has been putting up video game numbers lately is the best prospect in baseball. Late last year it was Javy Baez. Then at the beginning of the year it was Kris Bryant. Then during the middle of the season it was Jorge Soler. And now, at the end of the season it is Addison Russell. Fantastic!

Justin Steele throws 3 scoreless for AZL #Cubs, replaced by Carson Sands. FB up to 93, sat at 90.

...

@billazbbphotog: Carson Sands also pitches 3 scoreless for AZL #Cubs, w/ 2 H. FB up to 92 and threw nice curveball. Cubs did well w/ 4th & 5th rnd picks.

Thanks, cal. Good stuff. That's some good stuff with those kids. Fun.

I generally assume all HS pitchers stay in extended and go to Boise in their first full season unless they're an actual first rounder and their talent outweighs the additional coaching they'd get in Mesa. That's been the case with a lot of recent guys - Clifton, Blackburn, Underwood. Maples and McNeil didn't even get out of Arizona their first year though they were injured.

Steele and Sands are both 19. Sands is only 5 months younger than Tseng, and 8 months younger than Underwood. Steele is less than a year younger than Underwood.

So, if Tseng and Underwood were both sent to Kane this year, it's possible that neither Sands nor Steele would be kept back on account of age. Development reasons, and the slow buildup of innings-per-year, of course, might dictate otherwise.

I don't know what to expect anymore. I was shocked when Tseng got moved right up to Kane this year, at his age and without all of the instructional time. So who knows with Sands and steele.

"Now that pitchers are becoming more familiar with me, it seems like they're trying to study my swing habits and what counts to throw such pitches in," said Russell, who has hit two grand slams this season. "Basically today I wanted to get the pitches I want and not miss them. I saw that all night they were trying to pitch me outside and then come in. I just stuck with my approach. He gave me two fastballs outside that were a ball and then he came back with a fastball outside and I just got ahold of it."

C.J. Edwards, the Cubs' No. 6 prospect, allowed two hits and fanned seven over five scoreless innings but did not figure into the decision for the Smokies.

"He can throw low- to mid-90s and command his stuff and he has a 12-6 curveball that throws batters off. It's just tough to hit something that's coming 93, 94 mph, that's cutting and sinking and all that stuff. He did a great job tonight."
