I thought I could find this quickly on google but I couldn't.

I'm curious who was the oldest player in the league that Nolan Ryan played with or against? Who was the longest tenured player that Nolan Ryan played with or against?

Who did Nolan Ryan play with or against that lasted the longest into the 2000s? For playing with I'm going to guess Pudge, but thats just off the top of my head.

I'm pretty sure Charlie Hough is the answer to one of these questions, but I'm not really sure which one. I just know that dude was pretty much like the Methuselah of baseball. That or Jamie Moyer. Or Julio Franco. Or any other baseball player who played into his late 40's

From some quick Baseball Reference scanning:

Pudge played the latest of anyone Ryan played with (2011), Moyer and Vizquel both played until 2012 and played against Ryan.

On the other end, Ryan played with Bob Friend who debuted in 1951, and against Hoyt Wilhelm and Bill Henry, who both debuted in 1952.

This thread inspired me to play "Six Degrees of Gabby Hartnett." Our contestants: From the American League, Derek Jeter. And from the National League, Roy Halladay.

We'll start with Jeter...

who played with Rick Honeycutt...

who played with Diego Segui...

who played with Granny Hamner (LOVE the name!)...

who played with Chuck Klein...

who played with Gabby Hartnett...

who played with Phil Cavaretta...

who played with Nellie Fox...

who played with Joe Morgan (maybe that's who Joe got his meatball lessons from)...

who played with Juan Samuel...

who played with Roy Halladay.

I just kinda picked Gabby Hartnett arbitrarily. But I wonder who would be the oldest player who is six players away from someone on a major league roster today. Hartnett, Klein and Cavaretta were all on the '35 Cubs.

Delayed response but that's pretty cool. So we're talking 61 years. I wonder if that's the largest...whatever you call this in baseball history

Edit: OK brief searching, I found that Tommy John played one less season than Nolan Ryan, but his "footprint" (that's what I'm calling this) ONLY in terms of players he played with as teammates lasted from 1939 (Early Winn) to 2005 (Al Leiter)

Pretty sure this is the answer you're looking for. I got 7 degrees going all the way back to 1880. Here are the 7 guys. I'm not sure if there's 6 guys with an active player that can beat 1908. It's possible you could find 6 earlier than 1908 if you find a Nick Altrock/Jack Quinn/Charley O'Leary-type link in there.

Bartolo Colon

Julio Franco

Sparky Lyle

Warren Spahn

Johnny Cooney

Rube Marquard

Arlie Latham 7th guy who debuted in 1880, but was Marquard/Merkle's teammate in 1908

Fred Merkle

Leo Durocher

Gil Hodges

Ed Kranepool

Jesse Orosco

Oliver Perez is the youngest active player ( orJake Peavy if you want an AL guy)

If you count managers (and use their playing career as well) in this six degrees game, I have one with Castro and then I found one where it's just 5 guys from 1871 to now. Other wise it's 8 players (the 7 I mentioned before plus a teammate of Latham that played from 1871-1880).

Cap Anson 1871-1893

Clark Griffith 1893-1919

Buck Harris 1919-1948

Hank Bauer 1948-1964

Lou Piniella 1964-2010

Starlin Castro

Davy Force 1871-1886

Connie Mack 1886-1950

Billy Hitchcock 1950-1967

Joe Torre 1967-2010

Clayton Kershaw
