With the GM Meetings set to begin shortly, we should see transaction activity get some real lift-off this week. Exciting times over the next 2 months.

So, here's the question I have: How many players currently not on the Cubs' 40 man roster will be on their 25 man roster when the team opens the 2014 season in Pittsburgh on March 31? The current 40-man roster has 37 players.

Here are my predictions.

- I am forecasting that the team will have 7 new faces to start the season:

2 starting pitchers

2 relief pitchers (including a closer)

1 back-up catcher

1 back-up 1B/corner OF (right-handed hitting)

1 back-up CF (right-handed hitting)

- I am forecasting these 18 guys from the current 37-man roster will be on the 25 man roster on Opening Day:

Position Players (8): Castillo, Rizzo, Barney, Olt, Castro, Lake, Sweeney, Schierholtz

Rotation (3): Wood, Arietta, Jackson

Bullpen (5): Strop, Rosscup, Parker, Grimm, Villanueva

Utility (2): Valbuena, Murphy

- And, I am forecasting that Samardzija and Russell will be dealt for pitching prospects during this offseason.

I am interested to hear your personnel forecasts for Opening Day 2014.

Best,

Hoops

Assuming he stays healthy, it looks like we have our first new face for the 25 man roster: George Kottaras.

Alright, with Wesley Wright in the fold and the George Kotteras trade from a few weeks back, we are up to 2 new faces on the projected 25-man roster on Opening Day.

So, who's next?

Alright, with the Bogusevic trade for Ruggiano, we are now up to 3 new projected faces for the 25-man roster.

40-man roster currently sits at 38.

We're up to 5 new faces for the projected 25-man roster with the claim of Liam Hendriks and the rumored signing of closer/reliever Jose Veras - they join Kotteras, Wright and Ruggiano.

40-man roster will be at 40.

Hendriks makes some sense as the long man the way the current 25 man roster is set up. Villanueva and Arrieta currently have rotation spots, Grimm, Hendricks, and Wada would be best served starting in Iowa, and Rusin may end up the 2nd lefty after a Russell trade. He's probably the easiest to bump off though, adding a SP would do it unless they traded Villanueva.

Ehhhh we know what Villanueva is. If we dont add another starter, and no one's traded, i'd much rather see Shark/Wood/Jackson/Arrieta/Rusin with Villanueva as the long guy in the pen with Veras/Russell/Strop/Wright/Parker/TBD with the TBD being whoever earns it in camp (Grimm, Rondon, Rosscup, et al)

Hendricks DFAd. Brett Marshall claimed off waivers. 40 man roster still at 40.

However, I think Hendricks had a better shot at the 25-man roster Opening Day than Marshall does, so I am reducing the current count back down to 4: Kotteras, Ruggiano, Wright and Veras.

Still feel there are 3 more new faces coming: 2 starters and a utility player albeit my formula factored in a Jeff Samardzija trade, which looks in doubt now until the trading deadline.

I don't think Kalish will make the team out of ST but lets say he is healthy and looks promising - can we send him to IA without exposing him to waivers?

I think I remember reading that he expects to go to Iowa.
