Dreadlocks are not braided, they are matted. Rastafarians grow them because there is some obscure reference in the bible about cutting combing hair. I've also been told they take on the appearance of a lion. The lion is very important to them. I only know this stuff because I lived in Jamica for a few years and struck up an uneasy friendship with a few.

 

Rastas also don't believe in refrigeration of food.

Most Rastafarians are nonviolent and want to be left alone by the bald heads (white people). Think hippy/herbalist/environmentalist/commune type.

 

I did almost get into a fight once when an old man was blowing pot smoke into his grandson's mouth. I obviously asked him to stop. It wasn't pretty.

 

BTW: "Bumba ras clot" is a tampon. The real insult is when they call a white person "Jakes" (Jake). Tourists have no idea they are being insulted and the Jamaicans rude boys find it very funny...
