Starlin Castro contract wins again...

FOX Sports' Ken Rosenthal reports that the Rangers and Elvis Andrus are "close" to an eight-year extension that is believed to be worth $120 million.

Andrus, 24, is currently under team control through the 2014 season. Many assumed that he would eventually hit the open market since he is represented by Scott Boras, but apparently he wants to stay put in Texas. Assuming the deal gets done, it will be interesting to see what the future holds for second baseman Ian Kinsler, as top prospect Jurickson Profar needs a place to play.

Kinsler is gonna be a goner. Also, $120 million for Elvis Andrus is absolutely ridiculous

Considering his existing contract that would be torn up, a 6/108 extension for his age 26-31 years is pretty fair.

I don't care how good his defense is or how young he may be, I'm not giving a shortstop who plays in a hitter haven and can barely hit 5 home runs or .275 and steals bases at a 74% clip and an OBP less than .350 and is perennially among the Top 25 WORST at SLG a $100 million+ contract. For Andrus? I'd have done 6/60 max.

I think he's likely worth it. But I'd prefer giving that kind of money to a guy with more offense than he's got. Kinsler for Ethier maybe?

Beltre is signed through 2015 (and likely 2016 as well, presuming his option vests). Kinsler is signed through 2017 with a team option in 2018. Is it safe to assume that Profar is trade bait at this point?

Ugh, Taveras for Profar could become a possibility as well. Profar as a Card would suck. Although it'd take away a main competitor for Stanton.

Personally I'd have made Andrus the trade bait and kept Profar

Me too. With a potential all-star ss in the fold and Andus under contract through 2014, I would be shopping Andrus if I'm shopping anyone.

Maybe the Rangers aren't as optimistic as everyone else with respect to Profar?

No chance in hell of that happening.

I am not the biggest Andrus fan, though his bat seems to still be improving. If they got a shot this season, Profar you would think would be available.

his improvement last year was pretty much all due to luck. he struck out at a slightly higher rate than 2011, and walked at a slightly lower rate. line drive rate went down too.

It's hard to believe that Andrus is just 24. The biggest problem I have is they gave Andrus opt out clauses after 2018, so the upside for the Rangers is really fairly limited. They don't have him locked up throughout his prime. The good news is you've got him cost controlled (albeit at a premium cost) for the next 5 seasons. The downside is either he's going to under perform the contract, or you're going to be bidding for him again in 5 years when he's still in his prime and most of the teams in the league are awash in television money.
