I still can't believe we fleeced the Padres on Rizzo like we did.

Cashner is still a pretty good looking pitcher, and they had just traded for Yonder Alonzo. I think the Padres were really turned off by Rizzo's stats last season when he was in the majors. I wouldn't say the Cubs "fleeced" them, but I'd take the trade so far 100 times out of 100.

Cashner was badly mishandled by the previous management group too. He may turn out to be a legit #1 or #2 pitcher for a long time. If so, I'd say the trade was good for both teams (as long as Rizzo doesn't flop in the bigs).

I'd have to say the odds of Rizzo ending up an all-star caliber 1B are better than Cashner ending up a legit #1-2

That's not really going out on a limb considering the injury risk of any pitcher.

I'd say that even without injury risk, nor did I intend to go out on a limb.

All he needs is a good secondary pitch with that fastball of his.

And then another pitch.

Sure, but it doesn't have to be good and it doesn't have to be thrown too often. His fastball is that good.

There's a name for guys with a hard fastball(especially a straight one like Cashner's) and a good breaking pitch with no change up or third option. Short reliever. Cashner has the potential to be a top of the line starter, but he has a good bit of development to reach that point, considering his injury troubles and lack of developmental innings. He wasn't widely thought to be a potential reliever for no reason.

And then another pitch.

And command.
