So what's the scoop this morning anything new? Please be gentle I'm waking up from a bender.

Edit: Reading the last couple of pages. What happened to this thread? Did you people all drop X at the same time or something. Where are the mods to stop this nonsense? Can someone give me mod rights to properly get this thread back on track?

Sure....the "make user a mod" button is curiously placed next to the "ban for eternity" button though. Hope my parkinson's doesn't act up.

World Series starts Wednesday. They won't announce it then.

John Henry talked to reporters...

Meanwhile, one of the Red Sox's owners, John Henry, spoke to reporters outside a Boston radio station Friday and finally conceded the obvious — that they gave the Cubs permission to try to hire Epstein.

"I'm not sure that we've actually given permission to hire him," Henry said. "We allowed for there to be a conversation. … At some point, Theo decided that 10 years was a long time to be general manager of the Red Sox. I don't think people realize what these two people, (former Red Sox manager Terry Francona) and Theo, gave over the last eight and nine years, respectively.

"They brought two World Series (titles) to Boston and it's 162 games, 365 days a year, it's tremendous pressure so we knew at some point (Epstein) was not going to be general manager of the Boston Red Sox and we knew that was probably going to be, almost certainly going to be by the end of next year. So, this wasn't a surprise."

Quote from a Cubs exec via Kaplan:

"Larry Lucchino is one of the most unreasonable people I have ever dealt with and because of his frayed relationship with Theo Epstein he is looking to make a point at the expense of Theo's happiness and his desire to go to Chicago. I didn't believe that ownership group for one second when they said that they wouldn't stand in Theo's way if he wanted out of Boston. They are furious that he wants out and they are trying to make a point. Theo helped bring them two World Series titles and they have no loyalty to him and his happiness. They messed with Terry Francona and that was just an incredibly pathetic move and now they are trying to make life very tough for Theo," he said.

I don't know about that? It's just a GM hiring.

Regarding the PR aspects on the Cubs side if the deal falls through, Ricketts has a pretty easy cure for that in Ryne Sandberg. Might not be popular here, but casual fans would be more excited over Ryno in uniform than Theo in the front office. I don't think Ricketts would go for an interim type GM, though, while Theo's current contract runs out -- if the deals fails, it's Plan B for the GM and the systemic transformation continues with someone else at the helm.

That said, I still believe a deal will be struck.

I don't think Ricketts would do that just for a PR move. In fact, I'm pretty positive he wouldn't. He'd hire him if he felt he would be a good manager. I do agree they wouldn't hire a interim GM and wait until next year, wasting a year. He'd just try to hire his second choice of a GM.

I don't see this ending well for the Red Sox. They are coming off as complete asshats and I imagine other front offices are going to take a dim view of dealing with them. They are making enemies right now. I guess the Yankees weren't enough.

David Kaplan of CSNChicago.com is reporting that negotiations between the Cubs and Red Sox have turned increasingly contentious and the two sides remain far apart on a compensation package that would allow Theo Epstein to accept his position as head of baseball operations with Chicago.

"The Red Sox hold the cards here because they have their new GM in Ben Cherington and they control Theo for the next 12 months, said one baseball executive. "If they want they can force him to stay in Boston or on the sidelines for the next year." Epstein's reported interest in bringing some of his former assistants to Chicago is causing the Red Sox to seek more compensation than Cubs are willing to give up, and ownership appears content to make a point at the expense of Epstein. The Red Sox have stated on numerous occasions that they would prefer cash and that a major league player not be involved as part of their compensation package.

Wait, what? They never given permission to hire him? That explains the tampering comment yesterday. Is the owner on crack or something?

It's shaping up as the wife/husband coming home from work after 10 years of marriage saying that she/he wants a divorce. The person on the receiving end of that news is hurt and not about to just say: "Hey, that's great". They are going to try and save the relationship and not give up without a fight.

Nevermind the fact that the person who wants out probably did not feel appreciated for a long time.

Well [expletive] pay up already! The owner is such a prick I can see him just keeping Theo on the sidelines for a year. That would be a PR disaster for the next year for Boston. He can't be that stupid, but if he just wants money just pay the dick and get it done.

But clearly the owner can care less about making enemies. Hell, it never hurt the Yankees right?

Yup. It's basically a " Well you wanna leave us? Were gonna make it as hard as it can be and a living hell for you if your gonna do this to us" type thing. They're basically holding him ransom.

Damn, you guys just explained my life. It happened exactly like that, but eventually cooler heads prevails and things get done fairly.

It's different with the Yankees they have resources that no other team can come close to matching. Other teams are envious of that position. The Red Sox are making this beef personal.

It's not like Boston is poor? They don't have the same resources, but it's pretty damn close, no?

I have a hard time taking any report that comes from Kaplan with anything but a Mt. Everest sized chunk of salt.
