I thought it would be interesting to look at how well DSL prospects of the past few years have done compared to this year's top 3 hitting prospects. All prospects below were 17 in the DSL and in their first (and only) year in the DSL, except for Willson Contreras. I used Contreras' age 18 season which was his 2nd year in the DSL.

2007:

Starlin Castro: 221 AB - .299/.371/.371/.742, 23 BB, 24 K

Junior Lake: 223 AB - .274/.341/.404/.748, 16 BB, 53 K

2009:

Arismendy Alcantara: 258 AB - .275/.349/.415/.764, 30 BB, 47 K

2010:

Gioskar Amaya: 238 AB - .282/.375/.353/.728, 28 BB, 33 K

Willson Contreras: 64 AB - .313/.405/.375/.780, 8 BB, 6 K

Marco Hernandez: 255 AB - .286/.348/.388/.736, 21 BB, 27 K

2011:

Jeffrey Baez: 135 AB - .289/.373/.393/.765, 16 BB, 27 K

Jeimer Candelario: 123 AB - .341/.455/.455/.910, 28 BB, 20 K

Carlos Penalver: 126 AB - .286/.404/.333/.737, 23 BB, 16 K

I know the 2011 guys have only played half a season but it certainly seems like Candelario is the most advanced of the group at this stage. Penalver and Candelario certainly are drastically ahead at this stage when it comes to plate discipline, though I didn't check to see if control worsened this year DSL-wide.

Boy, you look at Castro's walks and you have to wonder if that's actually part of his game. I'm going to guess there are a lot of walks in the DSL just because of the pitcher's experience level, but it's hard to imagine Castro walking like that now.

Keith Law said something interesting on the Baseball Today podcast the other day, about how the "turnaround" for Jose Bautistia has been as simple as him moving to an organization that favors taking a walk to "swing swing swing." That when he was with the Pirates he wasn't able to allow his (apparently) amazing plate discipline to flourish as he's been in Toronto.

Makes you wonder if there are a few Jose Bautistias in the Cubs system. Will we ever know?

I think it's more likely that Bautista improved his eye or plate discipline somewhere along the line. The idea that if you don't have the right plate discipline as a young hitter you'll never get it seems hard to believe. I'm sure that guys who understand the strike zone young end up better than those who don't, but I still think people can grow into it.

My goodness Keith Law enjoys making a fool of himself.
