He also only gave up 7 hits and 213 BB after falling behind 3-0, so still registering 90 outs. I'm not sure how many IBB this accounts for though...

Greg Maddux faced 20,421 batters in his career. Just 310 of them saw a 3-0 count. That's roughly one every three starts.

If I'm reading the stats correctly on baseball-reference, that's not entirely accurate. He had 310 instances where the 3-0 pitch resulted in something (hit, walk, HBP, out, etc.), but he actually got to a 3-0 count 644 times in his career.

Hrm, that does seem to be the case... My source was incorrect.

So he did it once every 32 BF - pretty much once a game. I am not impressed!

For comparison, Carlos Marmol has gone to a 3-0 count on 215 batters thus far. At his current rate, if he plays until he is 42 like Maddux did, Marmol will have done it 602 times. Thus Marmol > Maddux (644). Impressive.

(Okay at his current rate Marmol is really doing it 43 times a year and that will give him 645, one more than Maddux, but I'm betting on Marmol getting hurt once).

Marmol will also face far fewer batters over that time (assuming he plays that long) than Maddux did.

To answer your question about intentional walks, out of the 644 plate appearances to reach a 3-0 count against him, 153 resulted in what was scored as an intentional walk.

Really? I guess I should have posted that in bold blue font.

How long/what was the streak that Maddux had going with BB? It was either consecutive batters faced or games in a row without issuing a BB, and IIRC he ended the streak on a IBB.

72 1/3 IP without giving up a walk in 2001. That totaled 291 consecutive batters. The streak ended on a IBB to Steve Finley, followed by a ground out and another intentional walk to future Cub great Damian Miller. He actually went 343 BF without issuing a unintentional walk, spanning nearly two months. Needless to say, his ERA over that stretch was a rather plain 3.53, by Maddux' standards.

By comparison, I doubt Marmol has ever gone 20 batters in a row without a walk. Someone look this up.

IP without issuing a walk

1962 Bill Fischer 84.1

2001 Greg Maddux 72.1

1913 Christy Mathewson 68.0

1976 Randy Jones 68.0

1907 Harris White 65.2

And people were mentioning Cliff Lee's streak of 38 innings pitched laster without one. Weak.
