I really like Bruce Miles, seems like the only Cubs beat writer from the big papers that knows a substantial amount about the Minor League teams.

Yea you absolutely have to protect Cabrera. If it came down to Smith and Smit, I'd probably lean towards Smith but like you, I can go either way.

According to Bibens-Dirkz himself as of the other day, he said he can top at 93-94 when he comes out of the pen, according to some guns that he said were reliable (the guns were supposedly accurate with other pitchers velocities). And he's definitely not one to embellish on something like that, being extremely humble. But I do agree with you that he might not be snapped up in R5 and if he was, it wouldn't be the worst thing because he probably is a middle reliever (maybe a 6th or 7th inning guy at best) like you had mentioned, even though he turned his career around when the Cubs turned him into a starter. I do know for a fact though that the Cubs are very very happy with his performance in Venezuela this winter, so we'll see if that carries any weight (doesn't hurt him that some of those AFL pitchers floundered). They also really harped about the signing when they got him out of Indy ball. He's a nice story though, so I;m rooting for him one way or another.

Likewise rooting for him. The notion that he can throw 93-94 is faster than I've heard, I'd never gotten that impression that he had the potential to throw that fast.
