it tears me up that ricketts insists on hendry when he probably could have had this guy before last season. huge bummer for the cubs, great hire for the mets.

Well, crap.

Ricketts should have hired Alderson as president and let him bring in his own baseball people. Give him total autonomy over the baseball decisions--which somehow he's given Hendry. It makes little sense to me and truly I'm surprised. I actually had some faith that they were decent business people. I guess I was wrong.

To play devil's advocate a little bit, why is Alderson so desirable compared to other alternatives? It's been nearly 20 years since his team had a good season under his watch.

i think your statements about his successes are a bit misleading, he wasn't working for any particular team for almost half that time. the rest of it was spent with teams without payrolls.

but anyway, to address the question, the man has an organizational philosophy that i agree with. i have no doubt that as GM, he would be a kind of dictator of team policy, who will employ a number of baseball outsiders and actually pay attention to them. in short, i like his organization philosophy because he has one, because bringing him in would feel like we are actually headed in a direction and not all directions at once. everyone would be on the same page, and that's what i'm looking for. i can deal with non-playoff seasons if i feel that the team has a plan for the future, and tangible goals.

what we have now is no plan.

plus he's billy beane's mentor.

There was talk of him being a potential team president for the Cubs, and that is what I would have liked to see, based largely on what he did in paving the way for Oakland to be great for a decade under his successor.
