The Mets’ latest reign of error is finished.

An source today confirmed that general manager Omar Minaya has been told he won’t be retained in his present role, and manager Jerry Manuel will be fired as early as Monday.

Minaya, who is owed more than $2 million on a contract that runs through 2012, may remain in the organization in another capacity.

Owner Jeff Wilpon is expected to begin screening a list of candidates for the GM job that includes former Diamondbacks general manager Josh Byrnes, White Sox assistant GM Rick Hahn and Rangers GM Jon Daniels.

Manuel’s fate has been sealed for weeks, after a disastrous second half that saw the Mets go from playoff hopeful to irrelevant for the second straight year. Wally Backman remains the front runner to assume the managerial reins, with Bobby Valentine a long shot for the position.

Manuel and Minaya are paying the price for a second straight losing season and fourth in a row without a playoff berth.

Manuel replaced Willie Randolph midway through the 2008 season but could not prevent another late-season collapse. The Mets were 70-92 in 2009 and are 77-82 heading into the final series of the season this weekend against the Nationals at Citi Field.
