Every year we say this, and every year it turns out not to be a big problem.

While it's good to see that no one was picked in the major league portion this year, next year we won't be so lucky. AZPhil posted the eligibles for next year's Rule 5 and I was shocked at who all is on it. Here's the guys that stood out to me anyway......

Jeffry Antigua

Jeff Beliveau

Michael Brenly

Justin Bristow

Kyler Burke

David Cales

Tony Campana

Chris Carpenter

Ryan Flaherty

Marwin Gonzalez

Jay Jackson

Junior Lake

Craig Muschko

Blake Parker

Dae Eun Rhee

Rebel Ridling

Aaron Shafer

Marquez Smith

Luke Sommer

Matt Spencer

Tony Thomas

Josh Vitters

Ty Wright

Obviously, some of these guys will be no-brainers for us to add. But, there's going to need to be some trades most likely to thin this group out some anyway, I would think......

This won't be any problem at all. Carpenter, Jackson, Lake, and Vitters. Beyond those four, I wouldn't get too worried about anybody.

Lake is nowhere near ready for a full year in the majors.

Sommer and Schafer are both guys Id be interested for in the future, and Im not quite ready to let Ryan Flaherty go for nothing.

Sommer isn't even the most interesting lefty on that list.

And I agree with TT and JeffH...not too big a concern. The only guy I would add to Jeff's list is Flaherty. And I'm sure one of the relievers will be protected as they always are.

I'm not too worried about that list yet. As of now, the only must protects for me are Carpenter/Jay Jackson, and I expect Vitters will be protected. And if a trade happens, I think Carpenter or Jay Jackson would be near the top of the list in regards to prospects going out, particularly if the Cubs hold firm and protect B. Jax and Archer (McNutt topping the list of likely guys to be moved). I'd guess 5 or 6 guys get protected. Hard to see most of those guys sticking for a full year. I like guys like Matt Spencer and Marquez Smith, but as of now, neither is a must-protect for me (I could see Marquez become a must-protect next year out of necessity). The org was reportedly high on Sommer this year, and they didn't protect him. I could see Beliveau make a ... Gaub-ian move and deserve protection, but even then, a LOOGY isn't a must protect (more of a if we can, why not). I like Muschko and Flaherty, but neither are must-protects (although I anticipate the Cubs protecting Flaherty as a utility player. Baker could get costly after 2011, so if Flaherty is solid enough, he could grab that bench role).

I'm still intrigued with the potential of Bristow, but he has to show what he has first.
