Over the past year or so I've dropped 50+ pounds and this weekend in inspired me to try to knock something off my bucket list.

I'm signed up for a Sprint Distance Triathlon on June 12th, 2011. I swim like a rock so I wanted to give myself plenty of time to train and prepare for this.

Does anyone have any experience with triathlons or know people who have? I'm just looking to get good recommendations in terms of resources for a training/nutrition program etc.

Thanks!

My GF does triathlons quite often. She's in Sweden for a couple weeks, but I can see if she'd be willing to give you some info. I know the Chicago Triathlon is August 27th to the 29th. If you want to get into the culture you should head down to the Hilton and check out the Expo that weekend. It's quite crazy. You can learn about all the different aspects of racing.

How long are the events?

The one I'm doing is a 750m swim, 20k bike and then a 5 k run

If you swim like a rock, the 750m (half mile) swim is going to kick your butt. You'll obviously need to build endurance to finish this thing, but you are really going to need to work on your swimming technique so that you don't expend more energy than necessary on the first leg of the race. You have a year to prepare, so you can definitely do this if you have your mind set to do it. Wish you the best and I respect the endeavor.

I did one last april with about the same distances. The swim kicked my butt because I dont live that close to an indoor pool so I didnt really do a lot of swimming before hand. The couple of times I did go I underestimated how many laps a 1/2 mile was. I didnt do much besides my regular work out and did some added biking during the cold weather to be a little prepared for that. I also had just lost a bunch of weight and was looking for something to motivate me to keep working hard, but was not that concerned about my time. I finished but the swim almost knocked me out since I was not that prepared for it.
