Man, the Nationals gave Sammy Solis $1 million and AJ Cole $2 million. When they sign Harper, they'll likely lock up the title as biggest draft spenders.

Probably the best strategy for them considering how much trouble they have signing FA's, still thats a lot of money for just 3 players Harper included in 1 draft.

Add another $800k for 12th rounder Robbie Ray. Yeesh, they could just sign Harper, Solis, Cole, and Ray and have a successful draft. I'm incredibly jealous.

While we're on topic, here's some info on where we are and what sorts of storylines will merit watching over the next 36 hours or so...

1) Barret Loux, the Arizona Diamondbacks 1st round selection, failed his physical. The Diamondbacks have no intention of signing him as things stand at the moment. The Diamondbacks will receive a compensation pick next year in the seventh slot (assuming everyone in the Top 5 signs).

2) The Dodgers are attempting to make a run at first rounder Zach Lee, although most signs indicate Lee will not sign. The Dodgers' owner is still going through a messy divorce and money is tight. Furthermore, Lee is a highly-touted football recruit for LSU. Lee has expressed a desire to play football and baseball at LSU. Reports were that he could sign, but that it'd take a lot to get him. If the Dodgers fail to sign Lee, they will receive a compensation pick next year.

3) MLB has been throwing a massive fit about overslot bonuses (like every year) and, as a result, has been dragging its feet on approving and announcing a large number of signings that have been piling up. News on signings has been slowly trickling out the past three days or so. Most of the people following the draft think we'll see a huge wave of announcements tomorrow on overslot guys.

MLB thinks this will somehow keep signing bonuses low and will help in negotiations...despite the fact that teams and agents frequently talk to each other. The underlying tension in all of this is that MLB might be playing hardball for when the CBA expires in 2011. MLB wants a hard cap in the draft. Whether or not that happens is anyone's guess.

4) While a little under half of the players selected in the first round have signed, the general expectation is for all of those players to sign, save Lee and Loux. As mentioned in #3, a lot of the guys are just waiting for MLB's go-ahead (including Pirates' 1st rounder Jameson Taillon and Reds' first rounder Yasmani Grandal).

However, there's still plenty of speculation on guys likely to get huge bonuses in later rounds, such as Austin Wilson, Stetson Allie, and Garin Secchini.

Signing news is starting to pour in. BA has compiled the Twitter feeds of its various contributors for those of you trying to keep track.

Biggest news so far is the Red Sox signing 4th rounder Garin Cecchini for $1.31m. There have been plenty of other signings, though.

Thats basically the exact amount people thought all along it would take to get him. It wouldn't surprise me in the least to see the Red Sox spend more today than what we spent on our entire draft.

Considering they've also inked Sean Coyle to a $1.3m deal and Brandon Workman to an $800k deal today, there's a pretty good possibility of that.

They also got Matthew Price today, so was an overslot in all likelihood as well. Don't know what he got though. They still have Jaffe, Duke, Ranaudo off the top of my head to go, probably more......That said, I think it's going to be hard foir them to get Ranaudo personally.

Ranaudo is an interesting case. Apparently Theo Epstein watched his Cape outings in person. On the one hand, Ranaudo could boost his draft stock with a strong senior season and end up getting seven figures if he pitches to his potential. On the other hand, he's already had two injury scares and could easily injure himself again. He might be best served taking the Red Sox' best offer...but we'll see.

Pirates ink 2nd rounder Stetson Allie. They sign Taillon and they'll end up with the two best arms in the HS class from an upside perspective.

The Red Sox will probably offer Ranaudo top-10 pick money which he'd be wise to accept (and after his performance in the Cape, he probably deserves it).

Zach Lee reportedly about to sign with the Dodgers.

LSU might melt down.

I'll be impressed if it's not a 2-sport deal.

Ranaudo just signed with the Red Sox, complete with $1.3m bonus.

Edit: Make that a major league deal worth $4.4m with the bonus. Yeowza.

What was the slot value of that pick?

Probably somewhere around $800k-$900k. The guy ahead of him signed for below slot at $600k, plus the pick is unprotected, so it's a bit hard to judge.

Zach Lee officially signs. Details unconfirmed.

Drew Pomeranz also signs. Ditto Christian Yelich. Harper supposedly is close, but he won't be officially announced until later.

Aside from Lee and Covey, pretty much going as expected so far...

If Harper didn't sign the Cubs will need to call up Shark back up to the starting rotation to help out our draft stock. The top 2 picks next year will be sick.

MLBTR has Harper signed, probably around $6.5m; not official yet.

Zach Lee reportedly gets $5.25m over 5 years. Someone stated that LSU issued a press release making it sound like Lee was a goner...trying to track it down.

Washington Post also saying it's a done deal.

Padres didn't sign Karsten Whitson. Wow.

Following up on Covey, apparently he went in for his physical and was diagnosed as having Type 1 diabetes. His family decided it would be best to manage his illness close to home in college, rather than having him away from home and dealing with it.

Wow on Lee and Whitson. And Covey for that reason. I'm really surprised about Lee because of the Dodger divorce situation.

Sounds like 4 confirmed first rounders didn't sign - Loux, Whitson, Covey and Parker.

ETA: Parker signed. Sucks for Clemson football.
