Keeper Question

Once a player hits their limit when they lose minor league eligibility the three year clock begins. What happens if during on of those years that player doesn't hit those marks?

For example, in 2006 Josh Johnson had 24 starts and so his three years of exemptness began but the following season he only had 4 starts. Does that year still count against the exempt years?

You're mixing issues. the minor league status is a one time thing. once they hit the mark, they no longer have minor league status.

exemptions are counted by years they hit the mark, so johnson's year with 4 starts doesn't count.

Which would then make him exempt for one more season?

he has three exempt years, if he has used two, then he would have one nore.

Just want to make sure I am understanding the exempt rules. Thanks Juan.

This is actually a rule we changed a year or two ago (for the better, in my opinion). It used to be that a year where a player had even one plate appearance or pitching appearance burned an exemption, so a September call-up or a brief call-up during the season as an injury fill-in would have counted. That sometimes resulted in a player using up all his exemptions before even becoming a major league regular.
