Indians DFA Matt Herges

By Mike Axisa [July 3 at 10:51pm CST]

Dennis Manoloff of The Cleveland Plain Dealer reports that the Indians designated veteran reliever Matt Herges for assignment following tonight's game. The move freed up a roster spot for the recently acquired Winston Abreu.

Herges had been effective for the Tribe, pitching to a 3.55 ERA in 25.1 innings, allowing fewer hits than innings pitched.

He might be worth picking up at the league minimum. I'm sure somebody will grab him.

Phillies DFA Jack Taschner

By Mike Axisa [July 3 at 5:49pm CST]

The Associated Press reports that the Phillies have designated lefty reliever Jack Taschner for assignment to make room on the roster for tonight's starter Rodrigo Lopez. Taschner allowed 54 baserunners in 27.2 innings out of the pen this year, as lefthanders tattooed him for a .303-.465-.394 batting line.

Also DFAd, Jack Taschner. Id give em both a look and get rid of Patton and Hart. Herges would probably be the better choice though since A. NL hasnt had as much of a look at him and B. we dont need another loogy who cant get lefties out.

Anyway, yes, Herges would be the guy to go for as a pen upgrade of they're finally ready to put an end to that silly David Patton experiment. He has a season WHIP od 1.184, which Id take in a heartbeat. No reason not to give him a shot.

Why in the hell would you want to give Tachner or however its spelled a look? That line vs leftys is beyond Neil Cotts level. Herges may be someone to look at but stay far far far away from Jack, or I may be drinking alot of Jack

I was just adding that he was DFAd and it wasnt worth its own thread. Herges is the guy Id really like to get. We have too many guys in the pen that Lou refuses to to go to in any kind of close situation. with Herges, Marshall, Guz, Marmol, and Gregg, we could have a very solid pen. Even Heilman would be a decent #6 guy in the pen.

You said you would give them BOTH a look, that has nothing to do with their own thread or whatever. But yea Herges adds more value than Patton, Hart, and even Shark right now. Heilman looks to maybe just maybe finally be getting command of his pitches. If he can do that, Heilman-Guz-Marmol-Gregg can be a very good backend of the pen.

I said give him a look. He was decent last year, and I remember the Cubs were talking about trading for him either last season or this past off season.

And as for Heilman, yeah, he was as good as weve seen him yesterday, but need I remind you of Thursday when he was at his worst? I was listening on the radio, and he literally almost made Ron cry when we had a 5 run lead.

I'm all for it. Not to mention, the guy is from Illinois and went to ISU.

I'd say sign him, and give Patton to Colorado with a bow on his head. Then we can send down Hart and Shark, replacing them with Guzman and Ascanio... and I think we have a good pen.

Marshall

Heilman

Herges

Ascanio

Guzman

Marmol

Gregg

I'm not a fan of Gregg as the closer... but that's another issue. I think with those 7 guys, we can have a very reliable pen.
