I don't think there is any chance that Nomar would be worse than Fontenot.

Well, I don't know what to tell you. With his inferior defense, near certainty to get hurt, and bat that really is no guarantee to be significantly better than Fontenot's, I'd call Nomar a wash if I was being generous. This isn't 1999. Heck, it isn't 2006.

Fontenot: .673 OPS, .235 EqA

Nomar: .696 OPS, .247 EqA

There really hasn't been much difference between them this year.

Another option that was mentioned earlier is Placido Polanco. I know hes the not having his best season, and hes the starting 2nd baseman on a 1st place team, but the Tigers really like Ramon Santiago, and I think theyd move Polanco for the right price. The fact that they're about ready to give up on Mags means they might be interested in Jake Fox. They could also use some starting pitching over there. Maybe Fox, Kevin Hart, plus a prospect or 2?

I wouldn't want Polanco at this point. He's not getting on base (.313 OBP) and he's not slugging at all (.397) and he's 33 - meaning he may not rebound.

From Garciaparra to Polanco, you're really going out of your way to acquire players that were really good five years ago.

fair enough, but hes a FA next year, and only making 4.6 mil this year, leaving about 2.3 left over so if we could get him for cheap, would you give him a shot? Id just assume go after a new 2B nex season, so for now, Id accept a slight upgrade over what we have now considering if/when someone like Sanchez or Uggla become available, we probably wont be able to afford them.

No, I wouldn't give up anything for Polanco. The likelihood is that he won't be better than Fontenot alone and he's even less likely to be as good as a Fontenot/Baker platoon.

The only way I want a trade for a second baseman is if he's a clear upgrade - a player like Freddy Sanchez.

Pirates "Pushing Hard" To Deal Sanchez

By Ben Nicholson-Smith [July 9 at 11:49am CST]

11:49am: One NL executive told Dejan Kovacevic of the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette that the Pirates are "pushing hard" to deal Freddy Sanchez. The Rockies, Giants and as many as five other teams have spoken with the Pirates about their All-Star second baseman.

Sanchez makes $6.1MM this year and will make $8MM in 2010 if he picks up 271 plate appearances before the end of the season.

10:05am: The Rockies are interested in Freddy Sanchez, according to John Perrotto at The Insider On Pittsburgh Sports. The Pirates apparently "love" Rockies minor leaguer Eric Young Jr., a 24-year-old with 23 extra base hits, 37 walks and 47 steals already.

The Rockies have had Clint Barmes at second base for most of the year, who has the same number of extra base hits as Sanchez and a comparable OPS, so the Rockies would be paying a lot for simlar production if they give up Young.

Makes one wonder if a 3 way deal could happen, or at least Rockies get Sanchez from the Pirates then we could try to get Barmes from the Rockies. What would it take to get Barmes from the Rox? They dont really need any position players. Would Marshall straight up for Barmes be fair?
