Apparently when releasing some emails, a U of I employee, who was unfamiliar with Santo, assumed the following conversation was about a student that was denied admission, and thus blacked out Santo's name. That's pretty funny stuff.

"Okay, let me call them," Soto writes back. "Well, the hubby is unhappy that [name redacted] got overlooked again."

"Poor [name redacted]," McLennand wrote. "I had not heard, he should be in. Did your husband get tickets?"

The e-mail is dated March 2, 2005, the day Santo failed in another bid to enter Cooperstown. U. of I. spokesman Tom Hardy said the employee handling the redactions didn't know who Santo was and assumed he was a rejected student.

"I know it may surprise the Tribune and die-hard Cubs fans, but Ron Santo is apparently not a household name," Hardy said.

The Tribune and the university are battling over the redacting of public records connected to its much-criticized admissions process and use of clout lists.

Both sides, however, agree the Freedom of Information Act does not allow censoring to spare the feelings of beloved third basemen or their rabid fans.
