Article on Vitters

“I’m not going to worry about what happens as far as getting promoted,” said Vitters, the consensus top prospect in the Cubs’ farm system.

Chiefs’ manager Marty Pevey believes Vitters could spend the entire summer in Peoria.

“Oneri (farm director Oneri Fleita) took care of that early on,” Pevey said. “Even when he was swinging the bat well, he was telling him basically you’re staying here the whole year.”

. . .

"He has to learn to be more patient at the plate and take his walks,” said Pevey. “Everybody knows how far and how hard he can hit the ball. They’re not pitching to him the same way.

“He’s the kind of player if you can surround him with people who can protect him, you kind of force their hand into throwing him more fastballs.”

Despite his success, Vitters believes he must constantly strive to improve.

“I can’t be completely happy with it,” he said. “You can always do better so I’ll keep working on continuing to get better every day.”

i guess i'm kind of glad that he's not surrounded by great hitters so they aren't throwing him all fastballs. you're not going to become a good player by mashing low 90s fastballs and never seeing a good breaking pitch or change.

nice to hear they are stressing the need to become more patient, though.

Colvin hit his 2nd home run of the day in the bottom of the 12th to give Tennessee a 7-6 win in game 1 of their doubleheader.

Colvin is really thriving in Tennesee. I wonder if he cracks Iowa by the end of the season.

Also, Darwin Barney is quietly having a nice season in Tenn. Hes hitting .330, and his .797 OPS is pretty good for a guy without a lot of power. Ive never seen him play, so I dont know if he projects to be a Ryan Theriot type or what, but hes another one that I could see in Iowa before the end of the year. Maybe the I Cubs can clear out some of those 30 year olds and give some actual prospects a chance.

Great to see a solid outing of Dan McDaniel after a month of slumping.

Colvin: 47 at bats - .319/.353/.617/.970 - 3 BB, 7 K.
