I'm not buying Green falling out of the top ten, though in my personal mock I probably will have him still slotted to KC. Someone will pop him in the top ten. I just don't know who. San Diego's the most likely.

I'll assume the Pirate will be willing to spend in the draft and figure out Miguel Sano by July 2nd.

This is a casualty of Kyle Gibson. The Birds haven't taken a high school pitcher since Adam Loewenn, that didn't work out well. With Matusz blossoming in Hi A, a front half of the rotation with White and Matusz in three years is awfully tempting.

The last few years have signaled a change with Sabean's policy on drafting. He's willing to spend, but he likes young guys... and he loves pitching.

yeah the braves have a boner for georgia HS guys, but they're usually smart about it and draft good local boys.

With Matzek off the board, this pick becomes difficult. They like Scheppers, but whether or not Scheppers' arm is healthy is still a bit of a concern. They could go on Mike Leake, but the Reds tend to like upside in their pitchers, Leake's is limited. Ditto for Mike Minor. They could also lean towards Tate if they want to give him the cash, but that doesn't seem to likely. Jacob Turner won't be cheap of course, but he's signable in this range, and you can also turn around and slot them Purke for a similar price tag. One name that could surprise people and end up here IMO, is Borchering. Call it a hunch if you want. I think he has a 50/50 chance of landing in the back half of the top ten.

Detroit was expecting Turner to get to them. They'll probably be willing to open the pocket book for Purke.

The Nationals will continue to draft pitching, taking one who offers both promise and decent upside, as well as one who won't break the bank. That should rule out Turner and Purke if they fall. That may also rule out Tanner Scheppers. They could try and take Kyle Gibson if they think they can get him cheaply because of the injury. There are no fewer than five college pitchers who fit the billing that go here. It'll probably be a bit of an overdraft either way. Minor was viewed as a top five pick prior to this season and profiles similar to 2008's Brian Matusz.

I thought about going Kyle Gibson here but it comes down to the medical reports. But in any case, it looks like the Rockies make it consecutive seasons with first round college lefties.

The Royals have a crowded farm system at the infield corners right now, and while the crop of pitchers at this point is uninspiring, I don't see them ponying up for a Donovan Tate with the questions about his work ethic. Mitchell is a nice, high-upside pick with some advanced ball already under his belt, something the Royals brass seems to appreciate.

Edit:

Forgive me for expanding on the format this far, but I was getting tired of trying to remember the draft order.

The Athletics have always been about value and underappreciated qualities in players in recent years. To me, Kyle Gibson is the epitome of a value pick. His stress fracture is some cause for concern, but frankly, it is not as serious as problems with ligaments/tendons/muscles. When fully healthy, he's got a strong argument for being the second best pitcher in this class. With proper rest and rehab, he'll fit in quite nicely with that arsenal of arms the Athletics have at their disposal.

Posted

Yeah that's not going to happen...even if Gibson was healthy and cost the same the Athletics would take Mike Leake over him.

No one's mentioning the Rangers in on Tate. Everyone forgets they have a purse if they want to open it. Tate might just be the guy it takes for them to do it, but they won't with Miller still on the board. Tanner Scheppers also fits well.

I was debating Miller vs Tate for the Rangers as well.

The Indians have a bunch of organizational needs, but I don't see them paying up for Tate. Borchering should sign for around slot, and is the best player available right now that will.
