Jay Jackson going against former cub minor leaguer Mark Holliman today, I'll be keeping a close eye on Jay as he tries to continue the dominance of his last five starts.
Posted

Jackson's final line: 5.2 innings, 2 hits, 1 ER, 1/3 K/BB, 7/9 GO/FO (although a quick glance through the play-by-play saw a few infield pop-ups).

Just going through the box score....would I be correct in assuming a 26 year old Blake Lalli is little more than minor league filler? I know how old that is for only being in AA, and saw that he was undrafted, but a 912 OPS for someone who can play catcher could at least have a little value, even if it is probably helped by a pretty good BABIP (2 home runs, only 7 walks to go with 110 at bats)

I will disagree with that assumption - I think he is climbing up the prospect charts, but like Jake Fox, he doesn't really have a position that he has excelled at defensively. In college, he pitched and played catcher/1B. He was a little raw in both areas when the Cubs picked him up. Despite his age, he has seen success everywhere he has been. I think of him the same way I think of a pitcher that has had TJ surgery (give him a little more time) - he is a little old for his levels, but if he continues to have success, you can't argue with that. IMO, part of the promotion of Steve Clevenger was to give Lalli, Welington Castillo, and Russ Canzler more at bats between catcher and 1B. Don't be fooled by Mark Reed's promotion who seems to be quietly fading away. I don't think he's shown enough to be more than a minor league backup catcher. :(

Anyone know the story regarding Ryan Flaherty's injury?

"Peoria Chiefs shortstop Ryan Flaherty left the game due to an injured leg. "

That's all the recap said - probably not what you wanted though.

Here's the play that he must've gotten hurt on:

"Jaime Pedroza grounds into a force out, first baseman Rebel Ridling to shortstop Ryan Flaherty. Dee Gordon out at 2nd. Jaime Pedroza out at 2nd. Jaime Pedroza out at 2nd, catcher Michael Brenly to first baseman Rebel Ridling."

Strange play. Think he got taken out on the slide at 2B?

He was taken out on the slide. His hip jammed. Walked on his own out to the bus. They will look at him tomorrow when the swelling goes down but I wouldn't be too surprised if he plays Saturday. Tough kid and it wasn't as bad as it looked fortunately.

That'd be my guess - the Peoria Journal Star has a story on today's game, but it doesn't even mention the injury - maybe it's just day-to-day.

Thanks Nate! Here's hoping he's back and at full strength soon.

I don't know what happened to Tony Thomas, he was doing sooo well to start off the season.

In other news, Jay Jackson brought a no hitter into the sixth inning tonight before giving up a hit. His strikeout numbers weren't up around where they usually are, but it helps when he allows no one to get on base.

This Tennessee team is struggling to get their bats going, Ryno needs to show them a thing or two about hitting.

The Journal Star doesn't send reporters to road games. They put together an article by A. Listening to my broadcast and try to take notes for a quick recap. B. Doing it from the box score/recap or C. Taking the recap that I send out to media and create their quick blurb.

It doesnt make financial sense for them to travel with us and they never have except for the playoffs. But they still do a great job getting an article in every day by listening to the game and using the recap I provide on the website. But sometimes they do miss things.

Apparently Jay Jackson was taken out of yesterday's game because he took a line drive off his leg. However, considering he uses Twitter and he apparently has nothing better to do in the hospital, he's been updating it.

is chillin in the ER, line drive off the leg. but im still feeling great

cant sleep. gotta keep my leg elevated and this is brutal! maybe time for some nyquil? night night
