PEORIA, Ariz. -- The Cubs' pitching is falling into place, with Sean Marshall being named the fifth starter on Thursday and Aaron Heilman moving into the bullpen.

Cubs manager Lou Piniella made the announcement after a 9-2 win Thursday over the Seattle Mariners. Piniella wanted to talk to Heilman, who started the game, before he made it official.

Good. I like it just because I wanted Heilman in the pen. If he pitches like he did from 05-07 then the pen should be better than last year's, despite losing Wood. So at least we've seemingly upgraded in one area this offseason.

hopefully heilman is okay with this and is a good reliever. he bitched a lot with the mets and probably saw the trade(s) as his ticket to a real chance at starting, so this will probably just piss him off again.

well if we don't acquire another SP he'll probably get starts, but yeah.... especially after he was told to be prepared to start when he was traded. i thought for sure he was gonna be the 5th starter

I assume Heilman is smart enough to realize that between Zambrano and Harden (and maybe Dempster) and the usual pitching health brouhaha he'll get plenty of opportunities to show he can start.

This is clearly a precursor to a Jake Peavy trade. :-)) Marshall's trade value has never been higher, and he is having a terrific spring.
