Keeper Trade Advice

5x5 standard roto 12 teams 5 keepers

 

Rollins, Braun, Hamilton, Lincecum are most definitely being kept. I've got Brandon Phillips in the last keeper slot now and definitely don't mind him. I've also got keeper worthy guys in McCann and Hart (and to a lesser extent Beckett and K-Rod). However, I've been agonizing over the fact that 3B is crazy shallow this year. The only guy who I kinda like who isn't being kept by other teams is Atkins. Other than that its Zimmerman, Huff, Figgins, Encarnacion, Beltre, Cantu, etc. Nothing exciting.

 

So what are people's thoughts to doing a couple trades that would switch out Phillips for Longoria? Of course, 2B isn't terribly deep either. I'm kinda stuck between a rock and a hard place here.

I'd trade for Longoria. Whiffing on a second choice 3B may cost you more than whiffing on a second choice 2B.

Yes but I doubt the trade is one for one. When trading players for keepers you have to take into account what the other guy gets. Is the upgrade from Phillips to Longoria good enough to give the other guy Phillips and some other keeper. If the other guy has really bad keepers and you are giving him two pretty good ones just to get a slight improvement then I wouldn't do it. All that does is give you a guy slightly better but the draft pool takes a hit and you could end up with a team much worse. I had to do this a couple years ago in a football keeper. We go to keep 3 players and I had Brady, Brees, Tomlinson and LJ. People tried to trade for Brady but no one could give me a big enough improvement over my other three so I let him go and he ended up being the first pick. That then dropped a better player to me at the 9th pick. The difference between who I got at 9 and who was available after that was bigger than any improvement I could have gotten with my keepers.

Yeah, ideally it will actually be two trades. The first being Phillips for a couple draft picks and the second being one of my non-keepers and a draft pick for Longoria. So my hope is net net I give up Phillips and a non-keeper for Longoria and a draft pick.

 

There is value in allowing some of your keeper worth non-keepers to go back in the draft leaving you with better options on the board for your first draft pick, but in baseball with 5 keepers (and I'm picking 7th) its value is much much less than getting a decent draft pick.

So to sum up my potential trade action...

 

I'm in negotiations to move Hart (a guy I'm not keeping) and a 10th rounder (or so) for Longoria.

 

If that goes through, I'm also in negotiations to deal Phillips for an 8th rounder and a 10th rounder (or so).

 

If I deal Phillips, I'm also in negotiations to trade Hamilton straight up for Utley.

 

And finally, I threw a proposal of Longoria and McCann (a guy I'm not keeping but I know the other manager likes) for Wright out there, God I hope he bites. I'd for sure throw in my 8th rounder to sweeten the pot. The oposing manager has A.J. Burnett has his 5th keeper (eww) so theres definitely value to him in upgrading to McCann for the downgrade from Wright to Longoria.

 

What do people think of trading Hamilton for Utley? On the one hand, the 2b pool is shallow and Utley appears to be healthy for opening day, on the other, I'm way way more bullish than the projections for Hamilton and it looks like his ADP agrees with me. But its an non-restricted keeper league and Utley is going to be the class of the position for a long long time. I'm leaning toward Utley by quite a decent margin, but what does everyone else think?

 

So potentially I could net net on draft picks, utilize my non-keeper players and upgrade from Phillips to Utley and Hamilton to Wright. Its a lot of work, but that would be fantastic.
