Cruz is better than Gregg, but the first rounder will probably be a better prospect than Ceda. Plus we aren't locked into a long term commitment to a reliever with Gregg.

 

A first rounder is going to be a lot more expensive than Ceda and since he'd be an end of the first rounder , he'd probably have a lower chance of making the majors than Ceda.

The Royals must think they can compete in the AL Central this season. Still seems like a bit of a waste of resources (salary and 2nd round draft pick) for them.

 

I don't know that they have a great chance at winning the Central, but what team in that division really stands out as stellar? Maybe the Indians? Tigers if they can put it all together? If you're going to make a run at a division, the Central is probably the easiest (save, perhaps, for the NL West).

 

Plus, Cruz is only 30 and should have a couple more years before he starts preparing to decline.
