the 1st year that I went to Spring Training was the year he signed. I was behind the batting cages in old HoHoKam and he was hitting and his bat broke. He gave it to me (it had the barrel wrapped in tape) and then after the game he signed it for me.I still have it and swing it around during games.

What is humorous is that I took the tape off and it was domingo ramos' bat!

He was part of that big splash free agent class the Cubs signed before the '01 season. Dave Smith, Danny Jackson and George Bell. Didn't work out so well, other than eventually flipping George Bell for Sammy Sosa.

It was actually 10 years earlier (1991). Despite the signings the Cubs had a losing season. They thought Jackson was the second coming because he won 23 games three years earlier.

Yeah - those would have been REALLY bad free agent signings in '01.
