--The Cubs may take a look at reliever Jose Ascanio as a starter in Class AAA Iowa this year. Ascanio came to the Cubs last year in a trade and impressed in spring training. Ascanio got into 6 games during the season with the big club.

"We've toyed with the idea of maybe putting him as a starter if he goes back to Triple-A just to get him stretched out, pitch more and develop his other pitches because his slider was so good when he traded for him, and it wasn't quite as good last year in the pen," Hendry said.

I thought I would back up my claim with the quote that got me there! :) From Bruce Miles.

If Ascanio doesn't win a bullpen spot, the Cubs may have him work as a starter at Iowa. They say his slider has come back to where it was when they traded for him at the 2007 winter meetings, and that starting may help him develop a full repertoire.

The optimism about Ascanio is good news. I'm not quite sure what the "full repertoire" bit is about. Are they thinking about him in terms of big-league rotation? As another option in the 6th-7th-8th starter derby? Given that he's only started 10 games in his pro career, only 1 of them within the last two years; given that he is only 5'10"; and given he didn't flash much beyond his fastball last year, rotation seems somewhat unlikely as a career home.

Having him throw more innings so that he can get more practice and get his slider totally back into shape, and hopefully improve so that he can have a 3rd slower pitch for surprising guys, that would make sense.

Either way, it would be nice if he had his slider sharp and his fastball fast. I didn't think his fastball was all that fast most of the time last year, either.

* I don't know what's up with the stats on MiLB.com but they've been off in the playoffs for both the DWL and the VWL.
