Garcia pitched only 58 innings for the Phillies in 2007 before going down with season-ending shoulder surgery. Now that his rehab is almost complete, he's likely to be a popular target for teams that need pitching help and were unable to fill their needs by the trade deadline.

The Red Sox, Yankees, Rays, Tigers, Rangers, Mets, Phillies, Astros, Brewers, Cubs, Rockies and Dodgers sent scouts to watch Garcia's workout at the University of Miami on Tuesday. It's believed that representatives from Florida and the White Sox were also on hand for his open audition.

I'm fairly skeptical that Garcia would really be of value to the Cubs. I'm glad they sent a scout -- there's nothing wrong with that -- but getting him back into game pitching shape will probably take the rest of the month. I don't see how a month or so of Garcia helps. Moreover, with Chamberlain out, I can't imagine that the Yankees will let him get away. They'll pay through the nose if he is fully healthy.

DH-quality hitter, please. Thanks.

Heard something on ESPN (maybe SC) last night about how the Yankees (surprised to see ESPN talk about them) were having discussions about getting him, but he can't get his fastball and slider right. If I remember right they said the slider is sitting around the high 70's.

Tigers To Sign Freddy Garcia

By Tim Dierkes [August 12 at 1:47pm CST]

According to Jon Heyman of SI.com, Freddy Garcia agreed to a minor league contract with the Tigers. The Tigers hope to have him in the Majors by month's end for a playoff drive.

The Tigers are eight games out in the AL Central and 9.5 out of the wild card, so their playoff chances hover around 2-4%. But there's not much downside to adding Garcia just in case.

Kind of funny how A. the Tigers think that Garcia will contribute this season and B. The Tigers still think they're in the race.

that's where mine was in 7th grade. of course, it was still there 5 years later, usually hovering around the middle of the plate and being hit really hard
