Brewers to sign Jay Gibbons

The Baltimore Sun reports that the Brewers are expected to sign Jay Gibbons to a minor league deal this week.

The announcement could come as soon as today. Gibbons is hitting .280 with five homers in 27 games in the independent Atlantic League, and earlier this season he wrote a letter saying he'd donate his salary to a team's official charity if anyone would take a chance on him. The Brewers will only be on the hook for the prorated minimum salary, but Gibbons is a long-shot to contribute this season. Who would have thought Gibbons would be signed before Barry Bonds?

Seriously, though, I don't see any reason for this. Kapler's been a pretty good 4th outfielder this year and Branyan is capable of playing corner outfield. This just has to be for organizational depth, or something.
