The St. Petersburg Times reports that the Rays have designated 1B/DH Dan Johnson for assignment.

Johnson, who didn't last a full week with the Rays, hadn't recorded an at-bat in three appearances. With Carlos Pena able to play through his hamstring injury, Johnson wasn't needed as an insurance policy. The move clears space for newly-acquired OF Gabe Gross.
