The St. Petersburg Times reports that the Rays, along with picking up Carl Crawford's option and declining Rocco Baldelli's, have signed Dan Wheeler to a three-year, $10.5 million contract with an option for 2011.

The other two moves were expected. Wheeler is making $2.875 million this year, his final season of arbitration, so this amounts to a two-year, $7.625 million extension. It doesn't seem like a very good risk after Wheeler finished last year with a 5.30 ERA. He was one of the game's most underappreciated relievers in 2005 and 2006, but his tendency to give up homers could prevent him from putting up strong ERAs in the future.

I must say I really love that you post all of this transaction stuff. It's really easy for me to see what's going on. Thanks.

So, what does this mean for Baldelli?

Isn't he concerned for his entire career now after that set back he had in spring training? What was it again? If he doesn't bounce back it sounded like his career is in jeaopardy

Why does it feel like 3 offseasons ago when we were supposedly going to trade for Crawford? Wasn't that just this past offseason?

The Rays had enough decency to put the kibosh on those ideas in about 4 minutes, rather than dragging things out for 4 months.
