Jim Leyland said Ivan Rodriguez likely will bat leadoff against left-handers this season.

Pudge has been batting eighth for most of the spring, but Leyland thinks highly of his base-running skills. Leyland also suspected that Pudge gets excited to bat leadoff and that excitement translates to solid at-bats. "I think it pumps him up a little," Leyland said. "It's good for him, psychologically." Pudge hit leadoff 17 times in 2007, but walked only nine times all year. His OBP was .294.

he started doing this in 05, the year they went to the WS. you just noticed this now?

i guess there's the option of hitting Granderson and his .265 obp leadoff.

That was 2006.

When has Granderson ever had a .265 obp?

I'm sure he means that is Granderson's OBP against lefties

Still somewhat interesting to me how Granderson basically does the same thing offensively that Jimmy Rollins did last year and he finished 10th in AL MVP voting whilst Rollins won the whole thing in the NL. Was there that big of a disparity between players' seasons in the NL and AL last year?

The Tigers missing the playoffs probably played a factor in the voting, but yeah they were nearly identical in terms of production. Rollins also should not have won.

Yeah. Rollins beating Holliday was some serious east coast bias. ESPN really homered for Rollins the last month of the year.

Rollins also plays a more valuable position.

This is true, but that disparity between winning the MVP and getting 10th place is still huge.

Rollins winning MVP/Gold Glove still pisses me off. Must be hard carrying a team down the stretch when you have 4 guys with OPS' higher than your own in the lineup. The NL MVP voting this year was fubar

Rollins wasn't even the MVP of his own team.

Rollins won because he was getting loads of press when the Phillies went on their run at the end of the season. Had their situation been different - say the Phillies having a huge lead in the East dwindle away to nothing before barely holding on to win the division - there's no way Rollins wins that award.
