His career stolen base percentage is that high because he chooses the best opportunities to steal a base. If he's not as picky about when he attempts a steal, he's most likely going to get caught more often.

I don't see why people are coming out publicly with these goals for the season. It would be better for the team if he just picked the right opportunities like he has been in the past instead of trying to force a steal to try and reach his goal.

stolen base success percentage is negatively correlated to stolen base attempts for a player.

wow you guys need to re-read that article. McClaren says that Ichiro could steal eighty bases. Its basically an exageration saying that they want Ichiro to run more like in years past.

 

"We don't want him running with the idea of stealing 80 bases. It's all geared to winning games."

 

 

When asked if McLaren's forecast was possible, Ichiro said, "I could steal 80 bases ... if I would get thrown out 70 times. When you run that much, there is a risk involved."
