In our keeper league, I picked your 16th ranked pick 8th, and your 8th ranked pick 17th.

 

How did you determine these rankings differently from the other ones?

Well the sample size of teams is growing. Basically I calculate an average team based off of actual results for a 5x5 12 team league's drafts. Using who is selected or not I calculate two things for each position, a replacement level player (usually found in rounds 18+ and on the waiver wire) and an average player (an average starter!, so I use top 14 at each position to include UTIL slots). Using the draft results I sum up the predicted statistics for each team. I then find the average team and the standard deviation of the teams in each statistic. From this we can take any team and find out what percentile they are in for each team. This can be converted to rotopoints. For example, a team that is predicted to score 825 teams by PECOTA is 1 stdev above the mean, so we expect them to be in the 84th percentile among all teams. So their expected roto score in runs would be 1+11*.68= 10.24.

 

With this framework we can analyze the players. First let's look at say, Hanley Ramirez in runs. An average SS scores 90.2 runs. An average team scores 790 runs. Hanley Ramirez is predicted to score 108.0 runs. So an average team who replaces their average SS with Hanley Ramirez would score 790 - 90.2 + 108.0 = 808 runs. Now we want to convert this change in runs to change in expected rotoscore. So we find out that 808 runs would be in the 69th percentile. So that team would be projected to have a score of 1+.69*11 = 8.7 points in runs. The average team would have 1+.5*11 = 6.5 points, so the increase for Hanley in runs would be 2.2 points. We do this for every player in each category.

 

Now, this is only over average, but we also need to include over replacement level, to get a relative distribution. To do that do the same thing above, but instead of subtracting an average teams score, find out the score of an average team that loses their average SS and replaces them with a replacement level SS.

 

Then to combine the six rankings (2 in ZiPS, 2 in PECOTA, 2 in James) I simply found their rank in each of them and averaged them.

Meph - would your rankings change for a keeper league?

So I joined a league tonight because I was bored. The league is a strange one to an extent. It's an 11-team (wtf?) Roto league, with 22 roster spots. There are 20 positions (C, 1B, 2B, 3B, SS, CI, MI, IF, LF, CF, RF, OF, and Util, along with 2 SP, 2 RP, and 3 P slots, which left 2 bench slots).

 

Using your rankings Meph, this is what I landed. I realized there were only two bench slots around the 16th round or so, which kinda screwed me up because I wanted another closer or two, but needed to fill more positions. The LF/CF/RF ordeal also screwed me up.

It would be great if you could organize these players by position and rank them by their points so we can see if there are groups of similar valued players. For example, we saw when you showed the second basemen that the bunch below Utley were similarly valued. That helped me realize that I can give up Phillips in a trade because I'll probably be able to draft a similar player a few rounds later.
