sure it is. his defense independent statistics rival carlos zambrano's three of the last fours seasons.

Wouldn't need defense if he struck more people out. Granted, that's oversimplifying, but it's the difference between a league average at best pitcher vs. a top 10 pitcher in the league.

and the extra hits he (should) allow because he doesn't strike out hitters is completely negatived by Zambrano walking 80 batters more a season

Funny thing about all this is that we really don't need another average pitcher unless we'll use him to dump Marquis (which I don't think we will).

I totally agree. For the price he doesn't really have any upside. He's an average pitcher who can work a lot of innings, but that's about it. I'll give him credit as he seems to do enough to keep the team in the game, but he's hardly impressive.

I really don't want Dempster starting, but think there's other options (including rolling with a youngster as #5 if Prior isn't healthy) that are better than blowing money on Silva.

Fielding Independent Pitching?

Silva:

2004 - 4.44

2005 - 4.17

2006 - 5.81

2007 - 4.35

Zambrano:

2004 - 3.41

2005 - 3.62

2006 - 4.15

2007 - 4.55

That's not the same.

He's not enough of a groundball pitcher to excite me for that money. 1.58, 1.55, 1.29, 1.57. Sean Marshall posted 1.41 and 1.55 this year and we can't wait to toss him out of the rotation. You need more tricks than an above-average G/F ratio, Matt Morris's G/F ratio was 1.57. Kip Wells's was 1.62. Chad Gaudin's was 1.79.

That's an ugly trend.

The Minneapolis Star-Tribune says that the teams interested in Carlos Silva include the Mets, Phillies, Royals and Tigers.

The Twins may make one more offer to attempt to keep Silva, but since he figures to command $8 million-$11 million per season for four years on the open market, he's likely a goner.

Ive heard the Tigers are interested only if they dont resign The Gambler.

USA Today[/url]"]Best potential bargains

1. Carlos Silva: He may have been quite ordinary in the American League Central, but in this weak pitching class that has only three 12-game winners, he stands out a little more. Silva could be a 15-game winner in the National League. The Chicago Cubs and New York Mets have expressed serious interest.

2. Jose Guillen: Guillen displayed his consistency by hitting .290 with 23 homers and 99 RBI in 153 games for the Seattle Mariners. It was the fourth time in the last five years that he hit at least 23 homers. His value wasn't helped by a San Francisco Chronicle report that he obtained performance-enhancing drugs in 2002-05.

3. Luis Castillo: A three-time All-Star, he hit .301 last season with the Minnesota Twins and the Mets while playing stellar second base.

I disagree with that. How is it a bargain if Silva costs 4/44? It doesn't even back up what it says. "He stands out a little more." Well heck, I'm convinced.

What annoys me is that people act like Silva has a G/F ratio of 2.50 or something, like he's this awesome machine that just churns out groundballs. Uh uh.
